Recognition Pictorial Manual of Naval Vessels
War Dept. FM 30-50/Navy Dept. NAVAER 00-80V-57
This recognition manual was utilized to train and educate members of the Army and Navy in how to identify the warships of several of the Allied and Axis nations.
Produced in a loose-leaf format to aid in the addition of new pages and the replacement of outdated pages as required, the originals were held together by a shoelace (yes, really) running through two of the three holes.
I have never seen or heard of any example being in any sort of ring binder despite the pages having three holes punched in them ostensibly for just such a binder. When originally issued, they came in a special cloth-covered box, the top being hinged along the left side.
In this particular example, the old pages were retained and the new pages from the two supplements were merely added by the original owner.
Originally published as a stiff-covered loose-leaf manual measuring 10.25 × 6 inches, on 15 September 1943, with pages from Supplements Nos. 2, 3, and 4 in the United States Naval Vessels section, by the War Department and the Navy Department, Washington, D.C.
