Popular Guide to the German Army 4: Engineers
Prepared by the General Staff, War Office
Published July 1941
From the pamphlet:
"Whether your first encounter is with a German armoured division or an infantry division, you will in all probability see engineers in the forefront of the battle. For the task of these troops is to clear the way, either by helping to storm a fortified position, by removing tank obstacles or by bridge-building. The purpose of this pamphlet is to tell you about the organization, armament and equipment of engineers, as well as the methods employed by them.
"ORGANIZATION AND EQUIPMENT
"The organization and equipment of an engineer battalion in an infantry and in an armoured division are given in the diagrams on page 3. You will note that there are only two main differences between these units. The battalion in an armoured division is mechanized; the one in an infantry division only partially mechanized. The reason for this is that the armoured division essentially depends for success on speed, and all its component units must therefore be mechanized. The other main difference is that the engineer unit in an armoured division does not include an electrical and mechanical tools park.
"In addition to their technical training, engineers are trained to fight as infantry. All units are therefore equipped with rifles, and all, except the park units, with light machine guns as well."
