  • This paper presents the initial results of a survey of Soviet military literature on the short but decisive campaign that the Soviets waged against Japanese forces in Manchuria in August 1945.

The survey disclosed a sizeable body of literature which includes major analytical contributions by senior figures in the Soviet high command.

These works examined in great detail the experience of planning, staging and conducting the campaign.

This work was intended as a guide to the rich material discovered.

It identifies the lessons that Soviet military analysts inferred from the campaign for possible application to modern military operations.

Its exposition of these lessons is organized according to elements in the campaign effort, ranging from plan conceptualization to the missions of the individual forces.

This work also supplies a bibliography of over 100 Soviet entries utilized for this survey, and an appendix listing the major commanders of the Soviet forces in the campaign.
