Journal of SITE O Fortifications and Artillery
10th Anniversary Edition
J.E. Kaufmann and Jon Malek, Editors
The Site O Journal consists of several articles about fortifications and artillery contributed and edited by members of Site O. The international organization known as Site O was created in 1998 by J.E. Kaufmann and Lee Unterborn and now consists of several regional sites on the internet. The members are people with an interest in the subject of fortifications and/or artillery. They pay no dues, nor does the organization have or receive any funds. The Merriam Press has published this magazine and pays no royalties or fees to Site O from sales of this journal, so that even those who have contributed articles or edited the journal must purchase their own copy. This is the first Site O journal and may also be the last. We have undertaken this project to commemorate the tenth anniversary of this organization.
When Site O was formed ten years ago, its first members were mostly people who had helped the author assemble data and material for the book Fortress Europe. The majority of the membership is in Europe and North America. Since 1998, it has expanded into Australia/New Zealand and some of its members reside in Asia, Africa and South America. Many members take a passive role, while others publish books and articles related to military history. Many members also freely offer their help in research and even in guiding others to sites in their area. More than one member, including myself, has relied on the help of others for gathering material for projects.
This journal provides information on some of the lesser known fortifications of the world, since there are entire volumes on the better known ones. We have included articles ranging from the Cold War defenses of Taiwan to the little-known fortified line built in Yugoslavia before World War II. Hopefully, Site O will be around another ten years.
Also, thanks to Jon Malek for co-editing this project and John Stokes for proof-reading the final copies.
